The project

Living Streets in a nutshell

  • A fantastic real-life experiment
With Living Streets, citizens can temporarily transform their street into the sustainable place they have always dreamed of.
  • Exploring a new way of designing our cities
It’s about hundreds of people all over Europe who turn their street into a meeting place, a playground,
a dining room, a garden spot, a bike park…by co-organising activities with other interested stakeholders and their city council.

The Partners
The Living Streets project involves the cities of Brussels (Belgium), Ivanic Grad (Croatia), La Rochelle (France), Milton Keynes (UK), Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Turin (Italy), Zadar(Croatia).

The Trojan Lab of Ghent and the Municipality of Ghent are involved in the project as inspiratiors.

Energy Cities coordinates the project.

Please contact Kinga Kovacs and Laura Guérin for further information.

Project activities

1. Coaching, step-by-step advice for cities, peer reviews and exchange

  • peer review workshops, study visits, webinars, direct coaching through the entire process by the Trojan Lab.

2. Testing and implementing the Living Streets experiment during 1-2 months in the partner cities.
In each partner city real life Living Streets experiments will be implemented. This action is the core of the project and is concerning innovation through co-creation concerning the use of the public realm as citizens and stakeholders will experiment with concrete ideas and solutions for societal challenges such as sustainable mobility, urban agriculture, environmental issues etc.

3. Evaluating the impact and translating the outcomes/reflections in the local policy making process on different use of public space
This will include:

  • Policy feedback to the local authorities concerning urban planning, co-creation processes and sustainable mobility
  • Take into account the findings of the “Living Streets experiment” into local planning policies (policy objectives and policy statements) and existing action plans and translate the acquired insights, reflections on how to pursue with co-creation and the use and role of public space in order to improve quality of life and become a more sustainable city.
  • Analyse the results and the transferability to other parts of the same city
  • Evaluation of the impact of the Living Streets in each partner city and the possibility of permanently transforming the Living Street neighbourhoods / areas / streets into pedestrian and social innovation zones

4. European transferability, recommendations and policy feedback
To ensure the replication of the Living Streets in other European local authorities, the following actions will be implemented:

  • Preparation of a handbook focusing on the improved use of the public realm from a social and economic perspective, stakeholder and citizen involvement during the preparation and implementation phases, impact on the policymaking process, etc.
  • Start of a Living Streets Campaign in other European cities to promote the Living Streets concept and the take up by other cities

Make the city of tomorrow visible today!
